Letting go of ego goals is a process for sure. Even when I think I am ready, I find ways of resisting that are subtler but still resistance. My favourite is just to go unconscious--get caught up in some dream or love, and wander away with the best of intentions to return soon. Sometimes that 'soon' turns out to be a year or two.
